Pipes, handrails stolen from park restrooms

WICHITA — Metal thieves reached a new level of desperation late last week, stealing water pipes and handrails for the disabled from restrooms at O.J. Watson Park.

The pipes beneath sinks and handrails in bathroom stalls for the disabled were stolen from a men's and women's restroom structure at the south Wichita park, police said. The thefts were reported late Thursday.

The stolen items had about $200 worth of metal, police said.

Maintenance crews installed plastic pipe beneath the sinks on Friday, said Larry Foos, superintendent of the city park department.

But the hand rails in the bathroom stalls have not been replaced yet, he said.
