16-year-old arrested in shooting near Atwater center

WICHITA — Wichita police today arrested a 16-year-old boy in connection with a shooting Wednesday evening near the Atwater Neighborhood City Hall.

Police spokesman Gordon Bassham said the boy was taken into custody shortly before noon in the 2300 block of East 18th, about four blocks west of the center.

Police said no one was injured and no damage was reported when someone leaned out the window of a moving vehicle and opened fire as about 25 children played in the area.

Police said two boys, ages 16 and 17, were the apparent targets of the shooting, which occurred about 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Bassham said the investigation was continuing. Charges against the suspect are expected next week.
