Royals send Aviles to Omaha

The Royals announced that infielder Mike Aviles has been sent down to Class AAA Omaha to make room on the 25-man roster for pitcher Gil Meche, who will make his first start of the season today after a stint on the 15-day disabled list with right shoulder bursitis.

The decision, which comes after the Royals’ bullpen has posted a league-high 11.05 ERA through the first five games of the season, means the Royals will carry 13 pitchers and only 12 position players in today’s game against Boston at 1:10 p.m.

“We need to keep as much pitching as we can right now until we get this bullpen situation ironed out,” said Royals manager Trey Hillman.

Hillman said Aviles, who has played sparingly off the bench for the Royals this season, will play shortstop in Omaha.

The Royals’ lineup for today’s game looks like this: Scott Podsednik LF, Mitch Maier RF, Alberto Callaspo 3B, Billy Butler 1B, Rick Ankiel CF, José Guillen DH, Jason Kendall C, Yuniesky Betancourt SS, and Chris Getz 2B.
