Copper thieves hit Ark City business

ARKANSAS CITY — Someone stole about 2,000 pounds of copper wiring and tubing from A to Z Scrap Metal, Police Chief Sean Wallace said today.

The theft occurred between 6 p.m. Monday and 6:30 a.m. Tuesday. Because of the amount stolen, police think more than one thief was involved and that a truck probably was used to transport the copper, Wallace said.

Metal thieves often steal to support illegal drug use and illegal drug operations, Wallace said.

Law enforcement agencies in northern Oklahoma are seeing similar thefts, he said.

Police ask that anyone with information about the theft call the Arkansas City Police Department, 620-441-4444, or Crime Stoppers, 620-442-7777 or 620-221-7777, Wallace said.

Those providing information would be eligible for up to a $1,000 reward from Crime Stoppers, and A-Z Scrap Metal is also offering a reward, he said.
