WICHITA — The knock on the door came at about 1:15 a.m. today.
Chris Jones glanced through the peephole of his door at Ashley Lane Apartments, 2250 S. Oliver, and then opened the door.
That's when the man in the gray hooded sweatshirt opened fire.
Jones, 55, was hit "multiple times" and was pronounced dead at 1:49 a.m. at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita Police Lt. Ken Landwehr said.
No words were exchanged between Jones and his killer, Landwehr said, and there's no indication the victim knew his attacker.
But the shooting does not appear to be random, Landwehr said.
"We believe that he was targeting Mr. Jones, but for what motive we do not know," Landwehr said.
Two women in the apartment at the time of the shooting, Jones' 53-year-old ex-wife and a 29-year-old acquaintance, were not harmed.
Only Jones' ex-wife got a look at the suspect, Landwehr said, because the other woman was in another room at the time of the shooting.
The shooter left the complex on foot, Landwehr said, but may have driven off in a vehicle parked nearby.
He is described as a black man about 6 feet tall with a slender build and wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt.
This is the fifth homicide of the year, police said. Anyone with information about the shooting should call the homicide section at 316-268-4181 or Crime Stoppers at 316-267-2111.
