Severe storm brings damaging winds to metro area

Trucks were blown off the road and power was knocked out for thousands as the first severe thunderstorm of the season blew through the Kansas City area this morning.

Damage was reported throughout the area as winds reportedly reached 70 mph.

High winds were blamed for an overturned semi-tractor trailer shortly after 10 a.m. today on southbound Kansas 7 near the Kansas 10 interchange in Olathe. All southbound lanes of Kansas 7 were closed for several hours. Police said the driver suffered minor cuts and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

More tractor-trailers were blown over in the Northland.

Power lines are down and giant trees were uprooted at 120th Street and State Line Road near the Barstow School.

The good news is the severe weather exited the area quickly. Periods of rain are to follow.
