Wichitan shot by own shotgun in hunting accident

A Wichita man was hospitalized in serious but stable condition this afternoon after he was shot in the stomach in a hunting accident in Butler County.

Butler County Sheriff Craig Murphy said Michael Mellecker, 33, was hunting with three other people on private land east of El Dorado when the accident occurred about 10:30 a.m.

Mellecker told deputies that his shotgun discharged when he tripped while walking through some tall grass. He was flown by helicopter to Wesley Medical Center, where he underwent surgery, Murphy said.

Sheriff's investigators and Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks officers are investigating.
