Today's snowfall expected to range between 2 and 7 inches

The ice pellets have changed over to snow except in the southern portion of the Kansas City area.

By this evening, the area will have experienced an extreme range of snowfall levels, said Dave Beusterien, meteorologist for the National Weather Service.

In northern Platte County, residents can expect 7 inches, and to the far south about 2 inches. Downtown Kansas City can expect about 4 inches, Beusterien said.

Police are reporting mostly fender benders, drivers who are skidding off roads or into poles.

Kansas City police shut down westbound Interstate 70 for a while because of an accident this morning.

Utilities are reporting scattered outages across the region.
