Mother, boy and friend drown in northeast Missouri

WATERLOO, Mo. | Three people have drowned in a northeast Missouri lake during a birthday celebration for a 7-year-old boy.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that authorities recovered the bodies early today from a St. Clair County lake covered with thin ice.

The victims were identified as the birthday boy, Kadin Baxmeyer, his 40-year-old mother, Kathy Baxmeyer, and a 6-year-old friend, Steven (Austin) Baum. All three lived in the Waterloo area.

Capt. Steve Johnson, with the St. Clair County Sheriff's Department, said the deaths appeared to be a "tragic accident."

The victims had planned to attend a movie together. After Steven's mother called police, officers went to the Baxmeyers' home. They found boots and gloves near a lake about 100 yards from the home.

Divers recovered the bodies.
