Meth lab explodes, sheriff says

ANDOVER — A shed being used to make methamphetamine exploded and caught fire east of Andover along U.S. 54, Butler County Sheriff Craig Murphy said today.

It wasn't clear if any injuries occurred. Murphy said people fled the scene.

The incident was reported about 11 p.m. Thursday at a residence in the 11500 block of U.S. 54, east of Andover.

Deputies and firefighters found a shed on fire, and authorities suspect "there was an active meth cook going on in the shed," Murphy said.

Neighbors reported hearing a woman scream and a loud "bang," he said.

This morning, sheriff's investigators and Andover and Augusta fire investigators were at the scene collecting evidence, including meth ingredients as well as the illegal drug, he said.

Investigators are seeking two people who have been living at the residence, Murphy said.
