Charges filed against 16-year-old drivers in fatal crash

WICHITA — Two 16-year-old drivers who were involved in a fatal crash outside Southeast High School last week were charged Tuesday in juvenile court.

Prosecutors are seeking to try both as adults.

Wichita police said the crash occurred after a group of youths in a Lincoln Navigator began chasing another group in a Chrysler. During the chase, police said, the Chrysler crashed into a tree at Lincoln and Fabrique.

As the driver tried to leave, police said, he ran over Yadira Villa, 16, as she was trying to get out of the car. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Prosecutors said one driver was charged with second-degree murder while the other was charged with involuntary manslaughter. They would not say which driver was charged with which crime.

The drivers also were each charged with six counts of aggravated battery.
