WICHITA _ Investigators say a fire discovered on a back porch of a house in north Wichita early this morning was intentionally set.
A 34-year-old woman told authorities she smelled smoke at about 12:30 a.m. in her house in the 2000 block of North Volutsia. When she went to find the source of the smoke, she discovered a fire on the back porch.
"She tried to fight the fire before she called 911," and that gave the blaze time to spread, Wichita Fire Capt. Stuart Bevis said.
The fire caused "pretty massive damage" amounting to $75,000, Bevis said. The woman was taken to a local hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation.
