Man dies from injuries suffered in New Year's Day crash

WICHITA — A 33-year-old Wichita man has died as a result of injuries he suffered in a crash on New Year's Day, police said.

Michael D. Palmer was traveling north in the 1500 block of North Kansas shortly before 5 a.m. when he apparently hit an icy patch in the street and lost control of his 1989 Lincoln Mark VII, police said.

The vehicle struck the west curb on Kansas, then hit a large tree in front of 1515 N. Kansas. The motor compartment caught fire after the crash.

He was pulled to safety by a person who happened to be nearby at the time of the crash, police said. Palmer was taken by ambulance to Wesley Medical Center, where he was admitted to the Surgical Intensive Care Unit.

He never recovered from his injuries and was pronounced dead at 5:15 p.m. Sunday. The investigation into the crash continues, police said.

He is the second person to die this year from injuries sustained in a traffic accident.
