Potential jurors report to court for Roeder trial

WICHITA _ People lined up at the Sedgwick County Courthouse today after being called to jury duty for Scott Roeder's first-degree murder trial next week.

Roeder, 51, is charged with first-degree murder in the May 31 killing of Wichita abortion provider George Tiller.

About 300 people were sent summonses to report this week and begin filling out questionnaires.

After answering the written questions, they will be called back in smaller groups next week. Lawyers for both the prosecution and defense will begin questioning people in person, some individually.

Out of the original pools, lawyers must qualify 42 jurors for legal cause. Each side may then strike 14 additional jurors, leaving a final panel of 12 jurors and two alternates.
