Tracks in snow lead to suspects, stash

NEWTON — Footprints in snow led authorities to two suspects and a number of stolen items, Harvey County Sheriff T. Walton said today.

Investigators found what appeared to be stolen items from Harvey County and surrounding counties, Walton said. The investigation continues.

Walton gave this account: On Tuesday, a Harvey County resident called in a report of a suspicious person walking near Southeast 96th and Hillside. A deputy found a woman at that location, and questioning of her eventually led to a stolen vehicle from Barton County at Southeast 84th and Hillside.

At the stolen vehicle, investigators fount two sets of footprints in the snow. One set led back to the woman.

Members of the Harvey County Sheriff's Department, Newton Police Department and Kansas Highway Patrol began looking for a second suspect. The second set of tracks led to a large metal building at Southeast 96th and Kansas Avenue.

Officers found the second suspect hiding under insulation in a loft. A brief struggle occurred, and officers quickly subdued the suspect and put him in custody, Walton said.
