DUI arrests fall sharply during holiday project

WICHITA — Wichita police arrested 175 people for driving under the influence during the 2009 Holiday Drive for DUI Victims project.

That represents a decrease of nearly 20 percent over the same period a year ago, officials said.

The project ran from Nov. 25 to Jan. 3. Twelve arrests were made during the first three days of 2010, 119 in December, and 44 in November.

The numbers do not include arrests made by the Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office or the Kansas Highway Patrol.

Between Nov. 24, 2008, and Jan. 4, 2009, Wichita officers arrested 218 people for driving under the influence.

The project's purpose is to raise public awareness that drunk drivers kill and injure many people each year, and to increase enforcement of drunk driving laws, officials said.
