Disabled woman critically injured in fire

A 55-year-old disabled woman was taken to the hospital with third-degree burns in a fire investigators say was caused by careless smoking Monday night in northeast Wichita.

The sprinkler system in the women's apartment at 2021 N. Old Manor extinguished the fire quickly, said Wichita fire investigator Kelly Zane.

But the fire lasted long enough to send the woman to Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus, where she was in critical condition Monday night. The woman was unable to move as the fire broke out, Zane said.
