TOPEKA | A newspaper is reporting that the Democrats' only announced candidate in the 2nd Congressional District is dropping out.
The Topeka Capital-Journal says in a story on its Web site Thursday that state Sen. Laura Kelly, of Topeka, cited the demands of a campaign and her legislative duties.
She told the newspaper that she couldn't run and serve in the Senate at the same time.
Many Democrats thought Kelly had a good chance of beating Republican Rep. Lynn Jenkins in the eastern Kansas district. Jenkins was elected in 2008, ousting Democratic incumbent Nancy Boyda.
