Montgomery Co. woman gets life sentence in toddler's death

INDEPENDENCE — A Montgomery County woman was sentenced to life in prison for killing a 23-month old child in her care, authorities said today.

Attorney General Steve Six said that Melissa Wells Coons was sentenced to life in prison on felony murder and 55 months for child abuse. The injuries were inflicted on January 17, 2008, and the child died three days later.

Coons was convicted of felony murder and child abuse after a jury trial in October 2009.
