Boy found wandering street placed in protective custody

WICHITA _ A 4-year-old boy is in protective custody after he was found wandering next to the street Friday night in west Wichita, police said.

A passing motorist spotted the boy walking next to the street near Central and Ridge at about 7 p.m. Friday, Lt. Mike Hennessy said. He was wearing only his Spiderman pajama bottoms.

The motorist picked the boy up and took him to the Patrol West Bureau, where he was checked out and then taken to Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus for treatment of hypothermia.

He told police he had been sent outside as punishment for getting into his mother's makeup, Hennessy said.

About an hour after he was found, someone called the station to report the boy missing. The caller claimed the boy had walked out while several people were in the house and had only been missing for about 15 minutes.

Investigators learned the caretaker of the child was at a local nightclub at the time he went missing.

No charges have been filed, but the case remains under investigation.
