Women hurt in fall from wall in Lawrence

Two women were seriously injured early today when they fell off a retaining wall in Lawrence, authorities said.

The women were sitting on the wall a half-block south of the intersection of Ninth Street and Emery Road near the University of Kansas campus when they fell around 1:15 a.m., according to police. The area encompasses a cluster of fraternity and sorority houses and apartment buildings.

Rob Kort, division chief of the Lawrence/Douglas County Fire and Medical Department, said the women were at the bottom of the large retaining wall when medical crews arrived. He said the wall is as high as 20 feet in some areas.

Kort said the women, whose names have not yet been released, were taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital and then transported to a Kansas City-area hospital with serious injuries. He did not know their ages or whether alcohol was involved.
