WICHITA — About 100 people attended a ground-breaking ceremony for the NOMAR International Marketplace this morning on the northwest corner of 21st Street and Broadway.
The market, which is scheduled to be completed next May, will feature a multi-use plaza and a 1,000-square-foot building with office space, public restrooms and an outdoor covered patio.
The $750,000 project will be operated by the NOMAR 21st Street Community Development Corporation as an outdoor cultural market and entertainment venue.
The project is a long-time dream for many, speakers said at the ceremony.

"This is a historic milestoke for the city of Wichita and this community," Mayor Carl Brewer said. "I know many of you have been waiting a long time for this moment. Is that right?"
The crowd concurred, at times drowned out by a train crossing the intersection.
"Wait for the train" the crowd called out when Anita Mendoza, president of the NOMAR Community Development Corporation got up to speak.
"That may be another 20 minutes," she joked.
