Truck fleeing police knocks out power for nearly an hour

WICHITA — A man trying to flee police crashed his truck into a power pole early this morning, knocking out power to nearly 2,000 Westar customers for almost an hour.

The brief chase began at Douglas and Main at 12:40 a.m. when the 24-year-old truck driver would not pull over for a traffic stop, police said. It ended a few minutes later when the truck went out of control and hit a power pole at Osage and McCormick.

Westar officials said 1,887 customers lost power for 49 minutes as a result of the crash. The driver was arrested on a variety of traffic offenses, and his 21-year-old passenger was arrested on outstanding warrants.
