County puts off possible ban on grass clippings in trash

WICHITA — You'll be able to continue to put grass clippings out with your trash — for now, Sedgwick County commissioners decided today.

A ban on grass clippings in the trash had been discussed last year as part of the county's five-year solid waste plan. The plan is intended to cut down on the average 1,279 tons a day of garbage — 5.4 pounds for each person — that county residents send to the Harper County landfill.

Commissioners in mid-2008 delayed a decision on the grass clippings until the beginning of 2010. It intended to conduct a yearlong study to determine how much clippings contribute to the county's garbage load.

Today, commissioners decided they needed more time and delayed a ban on grass clippings indefinitely.
