Lee's Summit lawmaker Yates resigns from Missouri House

JEFFERSON CITY | A Kansas City-area state House member is resigning his seat in the Legislature.

Republican Brian Yates, of Lee's Summit, said Monday that he is stepping down. The resignation is effective Tuesday.

Yates has been the chairman of the House Insurance Policy Committee. He was first elected in 2002 and could not have run for re-election next year because of term limits.

The 34-year-old Yates said in a news release that he wants to spend more time with his wife and young son. He also said he wanted to give his successor an advantage by having more seniority than other incoming new lawmakers.

Yates is the sixth state lawmaker to resign this year, and the fifth from the House.
