Man found dead in smoke-filled KCK home

A 53-year-old man was found dead early this morning by fire crews in Kansas City, Kan.

They responded to the 1300 block of North 77th Street about 2 a.m. on a report of a fire alarm going off and residents inside the complex of townhomes smelling smoke. Firefighters found the man in the basement of one of the townhomes heavily filled with smoke, according to a Fire Department release.

Inside that basement, they also found a smoldering mattress.

The incident is still under investigation, and fire officials have not released the identity of the deceased man.
