Hutchinson too much for Gardner Edgerton in Kansas 5A title game

EMPORIA, Kan. | Hutchinson ran away from Gardner Edgerton in the second half of the Kansas 5A football championship game today and claimed its sixth consecutive state title.

The Salthawks scored 45 unanswered points after an early deficit on their way to a 52-14 win at Emporia State’s Welch Stadium. Hutchinson has won the last two 5A state titles following four consecutive 6A championships.

Deveon Dinwiddie led the Salthawks, 13-0, with 219 rushing yards and four touchdowns in 13 carries. He also had one catch for 43 yards.

For Gardner Edgerton, 12-1, Bubba Starling completed seven of 16 passes for 173 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions.

The Trailblazers were making the program’s first appearance in the state championship game.
