Defense attorney pulls out grenade in courtroom

HUTCHINSON | The Reno County Sheriff's Office is investigating the actions of a defense attorney who pulled out a hand grenade in court, pulled the pin and sat it on the prosecutor's table.

Sam Kepfield says the grenade was a dud and was meant to demonstrate to jurors what is meant by the term "imminent threat." The attorney pulled the grenade out on Monday while representing a woman accused of forgery and theft.

Sheriff's Capt. Wayne Baughman says it's illegal for anyone to bring weapons of any kind -- even if they're fake -- into a courtroom without authorization.

District Attorney Keith Schroeder says he would turn over any information from the sheriff's investigation to the Kansas attorney general's office.

Prosecutor Amanda Voth laughed when asked if she felt threatened by the grenade, but declined to comment.
