Wichita schools will no longer notify families about H1N1 cases

WICHITA — Wichita schools will no longer notify parents when there is a confirmed case of H1N1 at their child's school.

Over the past month, schools have reported several cases of H1N1, or swine flu, confirmed by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.

"But for every confirmed case, there are dozens not confirmed," officials said in a statement today.

"Because it appears the H1N1 virus is widespread throughout the community, and because the health and safety precautions are the same regardless of the type of flu a student may have, the district will no longer notify parents when there is a confirmed case."

The district is notifying families of the new policy through automated phone calls with its ParentLink system. The message reminds parents that they should keep children at home when they are sick and not send them back until they are fever-free without medication for 24 hours.
