Teen is arrested after $3,100 drill and bit are stolen

Kansas City police arrested a 16-year-old boy Wednesday after he allegedly stole a drill and drill bit worth nearly $3,100 from Hilti Tools and fled from police in a car with another man.

The getaway car nearly hit a police car, crashed and got a flat tire near 41st and Locust streets. Police arrested the teen and a 35-year-old man and found the drill in the back seat of the car.

The incident began about 11:45 p.m. when a teen walked into the tool store at 1510 Walnut St. and grabbed a drill and drill bit from a display near the front of the store. The teen ran down the street and witnesses flagged down a passing police sergeant in an unmarked police car. The sergeant approached the suspect’s car, which had stalled out in the middle of the street near 22nd and McGee streets, but the driver got the car started and peeled away.

The suspects fled and were later spotted driving southbound in the northbound lanes of Gillham Road. The car later crashed and lost its front tire.
