Toddler pulled from backyard pond dies

A toddler died this afternoon at a Wichita hospital several hours after his father found him in a backyard decorative pond, police said.

Sgt. Jeff Davis said police received a call about 1:45 p.m. of a submersion in the 1600 block of North Arkansas. The boy was pronounced dead at 5:15 p.m.

From the preliminary investigation, Davis said, it appears that the boy, almost 2 years old, had been missing for less than five minutes when his father found him and pulled him from the pond.

Davis said the boy's parents started an immediate search for him after he disappeared from inside the house.

The boy was not breathing when he was taken by ambulance to Via Christi hospital at 929 N. St. Francis.

Davis said that decorative ponds "can be very, very dangerous" for small children.

The pond was about one-third full with what appeared to be rainwater, he said. He couldn't say how deep the pond is.

There is no enclosure around the pond, he said.

"It's a tragic accident is what it is."
