Man arrested in death of 15-month-old boy

WICHITA — A 15-month-old boy has died and a 25-year-old man is in jail in what police say is a case of child abuse.

The boy was pronounced dead shortly before 4 p.m. today, police Lt. Ken Landwehr said.

The aunt of the child called 911 at about 9 p.m. Monday, Landwehr said. The boy was taken by ambulance to Wesley Medical Center, where he was in "very critical" condition, on life support in the intensive care unit, Landwehr said.

Doctors discovered three skull fractures as well as evidence of a fractured leg and fractured ribs, Landwehr said. Some of the fractures were healing.

"They're traumatic injuries," Landwehr said.

The arrested man is the live-in boyfriend of the child's mother, he said. She has been questioned but not arrested, he said.

The boyfriend was arrested just after 3 a.m. Tuesday at the house in the 6500 block of West Renee Court, documents show.

A 6-year-old boy and a 3-year-old girl also live at the home, Landwehr said.
