WICHITA _ When a man walked into a liquor store in the Delano neighborhood late Monday night, said he had a gun in his plastic grocery bag and demanded money, the clerk wasn't about to argue.
But that changed, police said, when another employee at L.C. Retail Liquor in the 1400 block of West Douglas noticed there was a screwdriver in the bag instead of a gun.
She ordered the man out of the store, police said, and he complied — but not before whacking the clerk in the back. He left with a small amount of cash from the register at about 10 p.m. Monday.
The employees told police he was a black man between 35 and 40, between 5-feet-7 and 5-feet-8, and 160 pounds. He had a light complexion and had facial hair. He was wearing a black sweatshirt, blue or black pants, black shoes and white gloves.
He left in a Chevy S-10 pickup.
No injuries were reported in the incident.
