Trash can catches fire at Lansing state prison

Fire crews from the Leavenworth County Fire District No. 1 responded to a trash fire early this morning at the Lansing Correctional Facility.

The fire was reported around 6:30 a.m. today in a break area of the industries warehouse at the correctional facility, Fire Chief Rick Huhn said.

The fire was contained to the small trash bin, which he described as about a 15-gallon container -- slightly larger than what most people would have at their desks. The fire melted the waste can and created a lot of smoke, Huhn said.

Damage was minimal and limited to the trash can. The fire and the resulting smoke did not affect the area where inmates are housed, Huhn said. There were no injuries.

The cause of the fire was not known, and officials were waiting to interview inmates.
