Two killed in Independence crashes

Two people were killed overnight in separate traffic crashes in Independence, and police say alcohol was probably a factor in both.

Shortly before midnight a man riding a 2009 Harley Davidson motorcycle lost control and was thrown from his bike at Truman Road and Glenwood Avenue. Witnesses told Independence police that the motorcyclist was traveling at a high rate of speed westbound on Truman before losing control.

The second crash occurred about 1:20 a.m. this morning at Kentucky Road and Arlington Avenue.

Police said a 23-year-old Parkville man was driving a 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix westbound on Kentucky at a high rate of speed when he lost control and the car left the road and struck a tree.

The identities of both drivers will not be released until Monday, according to police. Although both crashes are under investigation, police said alcohol was believed to be a contributing factor in both cases.
