Bridal shop's tax woes lead to slashed prices

An Emporia bridal shop that was closed last month for failing to pay taxes will reopen next week for a liquidation sale that will feature 50 percent off wedding gowns, veils, prom dresses and women's clothing.

Madelynn's, a bridal, gift and women's clothing and accessories shop at 511 Commercial, also will take 25 percent off the price of other merchandise, including dishes, crystal, linens, gourmet foods, picture frames, candles and jewelry. Cash and credit cards only will be accepted for payment.

The store will reopen Tuesday and will operate from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday through October. The final date of the liquidation sale will be determined later.

The Kansas State Department of Revenue said it closed Madelynn's on Sept. 3 when the store owed about $90,500 in sales tax and about $8,600 in employment withholding taxes.

Madelynn's has agreed to pay back taxes through the sale of existing assets, the Revenue Department said.
