TOPEKA | The Kansas birth rate was down last year, while the death rate was slightly up.
The Kansas Department of Health and Environment released its vital statistics for 2008 on Thursday.
The report shows the Kansas birth rate at 14.9 births per 1,000 population, down from 15.1 births in 2007. The death rate inched up slightly to 8.9 deaths per 1,000, compared with 8.8 deaths the previous year.
KDHE says the state averaged 114 live births and 68 deaths each day last year. Almost 38 percent of the births were to unwed mothers, a record high.
Kansas had an average 51 marriages each day, down from the previous year, and 27 divorces each day, an increase over 2007.
Meanwhile, the rate of abortions declined to 132 per 1,000 live births.
