Gordon Parks Celebration next week in Fort Scott

The Gordon Parks Celebration begins Wednesday at Fort Scott Community College and honors the work and creativity of Fort Scott's most famous native son.

The four-day event was created in 2004 to honor Parks, a noted photographer, writer, poet, musician and filmmaker who died in 2006.

The celebration, which ends Oct. 10, includes Patty LaRoche, a nationally known speaker whose main audience is Christian women's groups, conferences and Bible study groups.

A "Celebration of Faith" night with LaRoche begins at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the college's Danny and Willa Ellis Family Fine Arts Center-Theatre.

"Hot BBQ and Cool Jazz With the Wild Women of Kansas City" is scheduled Oct. 8 beginning at 7 p.m. at Liberty Theatre, 113 S. Main in Fort Scott. Tickets are $22 and include a barbecue dinner and concert. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at Country Cupboard in downtown Fort Scott or at the Gordon Parks Center at the college.

On Oct. 9, Nichelle Nichols, star of "Star Trek," will be the featured speaker at a tribute dinner. The event begins at 7 p.m. at the Liberty Theatre. Tickets are $28.
