Sedgwick County Commission remembers slain deputy

WICHITA — This morning's Sedgwick County Commission meeting got off to an emotional start when Sheriff Robert Hinshaw spoke about the death of a deputy earlier in the week.

Hinshaw said that during a time when officials are trying to finish the law enforcement memorial at City Hall, "We find ourselves having to add another fallen hero's name. We hope it will be the last.''

Deputy Brian Etheridge was shot and killed Monday while answering a call on South Rock Road. His funeral is Friday.

Hinshaw said that a deputy answered a call from the community and lost his life for doing so, and his colleagues "put on their badges and in his memory went to work.''

There were dozens of sheriff's officers in the meeting room. Commission chairman Kelly Parks said, "This community is so fortunate to have law enforcement officers who ran toward the gunfire. Thank you everybody in blue out there wearing a badge today.''
