A Johnson County, Mo., car crash Saturday night claimed the life of a 44-year-old Edwards, Mo., man and seriously hurt three others.
Randall S. Pennington was killed when his vehicle slammed into a tree on U.S. 50, about a mile east of Highway M, according to the Missouri Highway Patrol.
Authorities said that Pennington, who was driving a 2004 GMC Envoy, apparently tried to pass a slower vehicle as he headed east on U.S. 50.
The slower vehicle suddenly tried to merge into the left lane, causing Pennington to swerve to the left to avoid the encroaching vehicle. Pennington then over-corrected to the right and then overcorrected again to the left, eventually running off the highway and hitting a tree.
Three others in the GMC Envoy, all apparently family members, were taken to the hospital with serious injuries.
Lori Pennington, 43, Michaela Pennington, 12, and Billy Pennington, 15, were all transported by air ambulances to two different hospitals.
