Kansas woman who shot sons had history of depression

WICHITA | Wichita police say a 49-year-old Kansas woman who apparently shot her sons before killing herself had a history of anxiety and depression.

SWAT officers found Carolyn Richardson dead with a gunshot wound to the head on Wednesday after her two injured sons — ages 16 and 20 — went to a neighbor's house for help.

Police Lt. Ken Landwehr said Thursday the teen had just gotten up from bed when he his mother pointed a gun at him. His 20-year-old brother was still asleep and was awakened by the commotion.

Both were shot once in the back. Police say the injuries were serious but not life-threatening.

Landwehr said the teen and a 17-year-old daughter who no longer lived at the home had been reported as runaways within the past two years.
