Two people died and four others suffered serious to life-threatening injuries in a head-on collision Tuesday on U.S. 40 at Interstate 435.
The accident occurred after 11 p.m. when a gold Mercury Marquis heading east on U.S. 40 went out of control, crossed the center line and hit a blue Mercury Sable station wagon that was westbound., according to Kansas City Police Sgt. Bill Mahoney.
The Marquis slid sideways after the impact, coming to rest with its rear perched on the U.S. 40 bridge railing over I-435.
Two of the passengers in the Marquis were pronounced dead at the scene. The Marquis driver's injuries were life-threatening. The third passenger suffered critical injuries. Emergency crews cut into the Marquis to free the four men.
Two 20-year-old Kansas City residents in the Sable suffered serious injuries.
Kansas City police are investigating whether speed or alcohol played roles in the crash.
