Hostage escapes attempted home robbery

WICHITA — Armed with a gun and a hostage, a man kicked in the back door of a house in north Wichita shortly after midnight today and tried to rob the startled occupants, police said.

"Where's the money at?" the robber demanded as he held the hostage by the neck and brandished a silver handgun, according to police.

But the sound of a man bounding up a set of stairs for cover startled the suspect, police said, and he ran out of the house in the 1800 block of North Madison without any money or stolen property.

The 18-year-old man who had been held hostage also left the house and was found later by police at his home in the 900 block of South Holyoke. Residents of the house know the man who was held hostage, police said, but he is not considered a suspect in the case.

Three adults and three children were inside the house at the time of the break-in, but no injuries were reported.

Police are looking for a black man who is 19 or 20 years old, 5-feet-7 and 150 pounds. He was wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt and light-colored blue jeans.

There is no indication the break-in was gang-related, police said, and it is not clear why the house was targeted.
