WICHITA — A kitchen fire proved fatal for a Wichita woman early Sunday morning, authorities said.
The fire was reported shortly after 1 a.m. Sunday at 237 N. Ridgewood, Battalion Chief Bob Thompson said. A search and rescue team found a woman on the floor of the house near the patio door.
"She was unconscious and unresponsive," Thompson said.
Efforts to revive her were unsuccessful, and she was pronounced dead upon arrival at Wesley Medical Center.
"She was trying to get out of the area, and in the state of confusion ... a patio door could become confusing to get out because it's a slider and not an open and pull like most doors," Thompson said.
The victim's name is not likely to be released until later this week, he said. The damage estimate for the house a couple of blocks west of Edgemoor was set at $90,000.
