Royals' Teahen returns to KC for examination on back

CLEVELAND | The Royals sent Mark Teahen back to Kansas City prior to Sunday’s series finale against the Indians for further examination of the muscle spasms in his lower back.

The ailment surfaced while Teahen fielded ground balls at third base before Saturday’s 13-6 loss to Cleveland at Progressive Field. He was scratched from the starting lineup.

Manager Trey Hillman said tentative plans call for Teahen to be examined early Monday. A best-case scenario would permit Teahen to rejoin the club in time for Tuesday’s series opener in Detroit.

Teahen is batting .274 with 11 homers and 46 RBIs in 134 games.
