Police search for leads in city's latest homicide

Police are awaiting the results of an autopsy to confirm just how Sammy R. Smith Jr. was killed.

Smith, 38, was found dead in his living room shortly after 1 p.m. Wednesday at 614 N. New York, Lt. Ken Landwehr said today.

"There was trauma to his body," Landwehr said, adding that the case is considered a homicide. "I cannot go any further into that right now."

Smith was last seen around midnight Tuesday at his home, and police want to talk to anyone who may have seen him on Wednesday morning or may have seen unusual activity around the house.

There were "some signs of forced entry" into the house, as well as locations inside that appear to have been searched, Landwehr said.

Smith was linked to a gang, Landwehr said, and has a past history of drug activity. But "no large quantities of drugs were found" in the house by police on Wednesday, he said.

Police were called to the house earlier this year on a domestic violence case, Landwehr said, but Smith was living alone at the time of his death. A former girlfriend "left just recently" but is not considered a suspect.

"She's been very cooperative," Landwehr said.

Investigators have many people to interview, he said, and they're looking for potential leads and suspects.

Anyone with information on the case should call the homicide section at 316-268-4181 or Crime Stoppers at 316-267-2111.

Anonymous tips can also be sent to Crime Stoppers by text message by texting CRIMES (274637) and beginning the tip with TIP217.

Smith's death raises the homicide total in Wichita for the year to 21, Landwehr said.
