WICHITA — A 23-year-old man didn't just have what appeared to be stolen furniture in the back of his pickup when he fled from Wichita police late Tuesday night — he had a 21-year-old woman and her 2-year-old son in the cab who suddenly found themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time.
A neighbor called police at about 11:15 p.m. when they saw a pickup filled with furniture backing out of a driveway in the 1200 block of South Emporia. Officers spotted the blue pickup as it reached Lincoln and Emporia, and a brief high-speed chase ensued.
Officers decided to end the chase, however, because the pickup was racing through a residential area at high speeds. They returned to the home where the suspected burglary had taken place — and the suspect came back to the house a short time later.
When he saw the officers, he bailed from the pickup but was arrested a short distance away. The woman and her child are not suspected in the case, police said.
