A 47-year-old driver was critically injured Friday night after he nearly hit a police car and later caused a series of crashes that tore up a city block.
Officers in a patrol car saw the green BMW driving recklessly at 24th Street and Lawn Avenue about 11:20 p.m. The officers turned around to follow the car and the car sped away.
The officers lost sight of the car but kept driving southbound until they saw a path of destruction in the 2600 block of Lawn.
The car had hit a utility pole, splitting it in two, then went airborne and landed on an SUV parked in a driveway. The car then struck a front porch and destroyed a fence.
Police had to call the city’s dangerous buildings department to check on the structural safety of the house with the damaged front porch.
Emergency workers had to cut the driver out of his car. He is expected to survive but may be paralyzed.
