Cleaver plans Truman Library ceremony to honor Vietnam veterans

Rep. Emanuel Cleaver wants to honor Vietnam-era veterans and their families — and he’s asking for help to find the honorees.

Cleaver plans a ceremony to honor Vietnam vets at the Truman Library on Sept. 12 at 2 p.m. He told reporters today that national figures — and, perhaps, several 60s performers — will attend.

His office wants to hear from veterans and their families so they can be formally recognized. Forms are available at or help can be found at Cleaver’s office in Independence or by calling 816-833-4545.

Cleaver, who was disqualified from military service during the Vietnam period because of a knee injury, said the recognition ceremony is long overdue.

“We owe them so much, and they have asked for so little,” he said.
