Man pinned in collision with trash truck escapes serious injury

WICHITA — A 35-year-old man escaped serious injury today when his car collided with a trash truck _ and the truck's dumpster arm went through the Ford Taurus' windshield on the driver's side.

The arm came within about a foot of the driver's head, and he was trapped inside the car for perhaps a half-hour before he was extricated, Wichita Fire Lt. Robin James said.

"I was very glad he was talking to us," James said of the man, because he could so easily have been killed.

The driver was taken to Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus, where he is in good condition.

The crash occurred shortly before 6:45 a.m. at Ninth and Broadway, authorities said.
